As visual creatures, sight tends to dominate much of our perception. As a result it’s easy to miss a lot of what’s happening around us in nature.  That’s why one of our favorite exercises to do with students of any age, is the creation of a Sound Map (from 5 Minute Field Trips, page 9).

Lending further insight to the value of listening to the natural world, in this video Bernie Krause talks about his 45-year career recording wild soundscapes and the changes he’s observed (or rather “heard”) when ecosystems are disrupted by human activities.
