The AskNature Hive

In this conversation with award-winning photographer and National Geographic Explorer Stephen Alvarez, we’ll dive into the themes of his newest book, Rock Art: An American Story. Alvarez’s work documents petroglyphs, pictographs, and earthworks across North America, spanning sites more than 15,000 years old. Produced in partnership with members of Indigenous tribes including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Ute, Navajo, and Shawnee, the book centers on the core understanding that humans are part of the natural world, not apart from it.

As we explore the insights encoded in some of humanity’s oldest archives, we will discuss how this ancient ecological knowledge can inform our understanding of the interactions between biodiversity and climate, and the best roles humans can play in the natural community.

Alvarez is the founder of the nonprofit Ancient Art Archive and his work has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, Time Magazine, The Nature Conservancy, and The New York Times.

Hosted by Chief Editor, Andrew Howley.
